I've lived in the city of Oaxaca for a few years. Flat out, I'll tell you that I miss Halloween, my favorite holiday. That being said, I've finally figured out how to embrace Dia De Meurtos here, the amazing near week of celebration that includes Graveyard parties (hang out with the Dead!), parades, feasts and more.
Oaxaca is not a city that reveals itself easily to a tall white crossdresser from north of the border, so I've kept an eye open for drag events, clubs or cabarets, let alone any crossdresser groups. This stuff has been under the radar for me. So it was a hell of a lot of fun and a great night on Nov. 1 when I joined a comparsa in the Cinco Senores neighborhood of Oaxaca that included both gay and straight contingents. The costumes were amazing. Nuns, popes, hookers and traditional outfits such as Catalina and La Llorena. Then, a clown and a dragon with giant foam rubber masks. Too cool.

Me, I borrowed a sparkely red devil mask, donned my favorite red sparkly mini, strappy black spike heels, some sheer nude pantyhose and danced like crazy to the brass band with the rest of the costumed revelers.
One cute little Oaxacan gal dressed in the skull face and white wedding dress of La Llorena grabbed me by the hand and pulled me into the dance circle when I was acting coy. We danced like it was 1999 for a good 15 minutes as this was the cresendo, the last stop of the parade.
Some big ol' nominally straight dude came beaming out of the crowd to hit on me as the comparsa broke up, have seen his type before, my pal Carrie and I politely skipped out and went downtown to the Zocalo -- thanks Carrie for excorting me on my maiden drag voyage in Oaxaca.
More to come soon I hope, as I'm going to the crowning of the Muxe Queen in the drag friendly town of Jucitan in a couple weeks!
The pic here is sans the red mini, but at least here is the devil mask.
